A Rhapsody on "Nani Nā Pua Koʻolau” is a symphonic excursion through the Koʻolau mountain range on the eastern half of Oahu, based on a composition by Queen Liliʻuokalani. This work for band highlights the original song’s evocative text of fragrant and beautiful flowers in the mountain alongside the massiveness and mystique of the land form itself. Just as many Hawaiian compositions intensely link the complex connection of natural land to emotion, so too does this piece attempt to capture a similar passion, fervor, and sincerity throughout. Throughout this piece are various key and mood changes, highlighted by short solos throughout the ensemble and an extended percussion groove/timpani solo.
